After a year of not being able to complete much, the Minarets National Honors Society (NHS) is starting the year off strong with one of their first meetings. For over a hundred years, the NHS has been part of United States history. However, at Minarets, the organization is turning 5 years old with English and Spanish teacher Michael Land in charge along with students senior Jadyn Stafford and senior Kealani Peterson, president and secretary of the club.
Land discussed what the group plans to do throughout the year.
“We are trying to get it situated so that the students from NHS can help in intervention; and to run a tutoring program or to help the intervention teachers,” he stated. “Our goal though is to raise money through donations to where we can take maybe a trip to go see some colleges that students might have interest in.”
In order to make a donation, students and other individuals can reach out to Autumn Alford.
“A goal of NHS is also to promote and help other people in general; in the community and on campus. Maybe in a sense similar to Key Club or other clubs.”
In order to join NHS, students must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a GPA of a 3.0 or higher. There is also a form they must fill out that is due Sept. 30 and can be found on the Minarets website. The form also requires letters of recommendation from teachers. In order to stay eligible once in the club, students must keep their GPA a 3.0 or higher and attend club meetings every odd schedule Monday. And with a new school year, NHS has big plans.
