Appreciating Minarets Teachers

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

It’s not often that students take the time to thank their teachers for all they do, but in the beginning of May, students and families all across the country took the time to celebrate “Teacher Appreciation Week.” Let's take a step back and hear what students at Minarets had to say about their own teachers.

Sophomore Rider Clark talked about the teacher that inspired him the most this past year, English teacher Mikendra McCoy. Clark went on to explain that he likes how straightforward and honest McCoy is in her instruction. He explained, “Her class is different from others because she likes to tell her students the truth and does not sugarcoat anything which is very needed for high schoolers.” McCoy made a big impact on the sophomore’s life, telling him how he can be successful and what he needs to do to be successful throughout his career. Rider offered advice to underclassmen who will take her classes in the future, saying, “Be honest with her and she will be straight up and honest back.”

In addition is sophomore Sophia Kennedy, with art teacher Jill Gamble as her inspiring teacher. Kennedy states, “Mrs. Gamble has inspired me by helping me try new techniques and styles while making art!” She added that Gamble has taught her that art does not need to be realistic to be considered 'good. To Kennedy, Gamble’s classroom is different from others due to the freedom to express herself and to work in solitude. “I'd tell someone who was going to take art class to not be afraid to talk to the teacher!" said Kennedy. "Mrs. Gamble is always very supportive and there to help when needed.”

Finally is student Katelynn Mangan who expressed her particular appreciation for media teacher Juan Ortiz. Mangan communicated that Ortiz is different from other teachers due to his positivity and the way he shows that positivity throughout the classroom. “Mr. Ortiz has impacted me because he has taught me how to do better in all my classes with time management and how to be an overall better student,” stated Mangan. She voiced that in his classroom, you need to be yourself, continue your work throughout school, and get everything in on time.

From everyone here at Minarets Press, thank you to all Minarets teachers for everything you do for your students!
