Scorin' Boys Soccer Season

Updated: May 24, 2020

Varsity Team

Coach Juan Ibarra has been coaching soccer since he graduated high school in 2011. He first started coaching as an alumni at his prior high school. He has been coaching at Minarets High School for three years now, starting as an assistant coach and made his way to head coach this year. “It has been a learning experience,” said the coach when asked about how this years season has gone. “The boys have learned a lot, the start of the season they started strong and later faced teams who were stronger. Juan says, “It was a bit of an eye opener for the boys, that not every time we are victorious.” The biggest highlight of the year was their recent game against Caruthers. With the boys’ motivation and determination, throughout the long 80 minutes they didn’t give up. They not only wanted to win but to compete and show off their hard work.

Most likely to be captains this year were players senior Ashton Freeland, juniors Colby Jobinger, and Thomas Garner. Coach Juan chooses his captains by what players can prove leadership and the ones that can take charge, who can lead by example and who’s hungry to play. This season he took note of the boys that were at practice the most often as well. The boys have three more games this season and Juan hopes the boys will play as they played at Caruthers regardless of what the scores come to be. He is excited for next years seasons tryouts to reinforce teams and find who is fit to play on his Varsity team.

JV

Jose Sanchez is this years JV coach for Minarets High School. Before coaching here he coached an under eights team in 2007-2008 and moved to coaching an under twelves team in the year of 2009. He says that the season for the JV boys soccer team has gone well and they have shown great improvement. They have shown Coach Jose more teamwork and leadership since the first game of the season. This year the main captains have been freshmen Sebastian Vellandi, Kristian Beighey, and Quinn Hedberg. Coach says he chooses captains by who shows more leadership. He hopes for the boys to finish this season strong, give it their all and leave it on the field.
