Mark your calendars, Mustangs. ABC 30’s Game of the Week special is returning to Minarets High School on Oct 25.
The successful inaugural rally last year has set up Minarets for another exciting rally to once again be broadcasted live on local television. Patrick Wilson, director of Minarets Charter High, says ABC 30 was very impressed with Minarets’s student turnout last year, and he hopes to repeat it again this year. “We were able to get almost two-thirds of the student body into the gym last year. Most schools, at that early morning, don’t come close to getting over 50% of their student body into a gym for that early morning broadcast.”
Last year’s success owes thanks to student turnout but also to the variety of aspects Minarets showcased on camera. The dance team showed off their moves, the band played loud and proud, and even FFA students’ animals made an appearance; all of these demonstrating the diversity of activities Minarets is proud to display. To pull this off, however, students and staff must arrive before sunrise to be ready for the morning news special. ASB President and senior Colby Jobinger commented on this, saying, “[The ABC 30 rally] brings more of that mustang pride into the school...you gotta be there so early and be dedicated to getting very hyped and showing the whole Central Valley what our school is and how excited we are for our team.”
ABC 30, the most watched local news channel, offers Game of the Week specials as a chance at free publicity for high schools around the valley. It can help with recruitment and enrollment and getting the Minarets name out to people who have never heard of the high school, says Wilson.
This year, the Game of the Week special will fall on the famous Dam Bowl, a rival game between Minarets and Sierra High. Buses will be sent to North Fork, Madera, and River Park; their estimated pick up time will be around 4:45 in the morning. All students will need to be in the gym by 5:15 to 5:20 as the broadcast will begin at 5:30. Both Wilson and Jobinger encourage students to come out for the event. Wilson says, “The idea is to get as many possible programs and kids and as much purple as you can. It looks really good on television. Everyone loves purple.”
