Throughout Minarets and the Chawanakee community, family is a big priority. At Minarets there are six Cs that the school takes great pride in, one of which is community. Through thick and thin, it seems the school has each other’s backs. A great example of this is the ag department’s “Adopt a Family” project. For several weeks before Christmas break, FFA asks students and their families to bring donations in to help provide Christmas celebrations for families in need.
Ag Biology teacher Sydney Keen had many good things to say about the donation drive. She expressed how much of a success the event was and went on to explain that each family received a full Christmas celebration with the donations. The families were also provided with several pantry and household items.
Keen stated, “The families are always incredibly grateful for the items they are receiving. They thank us profusely and express how truly thankful they are multiple times while we are there. There aren't really any words to describe that moment, but it is so humbling to see them receive their boxes of items.”
Ag Biology teacher Keeley Hall had more to add to Keen’s statements. She explained that it is one of the most heartwarming experiences, and she wants the students and families to know that even though they don’t know the families, they are still making a huge difference and impact on their lives.
“This is one of my favorite events. I love that we are helping people within our Minarets community. When we deliver the gifts the amount of gratitude received is overwhelming. This event makes a bigger difference than we ever imagined it would,” said Hall.
Sophomore and FFA chapter officer Joshua Wolford agrees with both Keen and Hall’s words about the fundraiser. Wolford understands that sometimes students and families might be a little skeptical about donating to families that they don’t know, but reassures everyone that it’s for a great cause. He went on to say that the fundraiser was a huge success and that he’s appreciative of everyone for donating and making a difference in the community. Wolford would also like to tell his fellow students, “This donation drive is a heartwarming opportunity for them to participate in and to be giving not just a gift, but the opportunity for a family to have a Christmas when they are unable to provide one.”
