Students Dance Their Way into the New Year

Updated: Sep 27, 2020

Excitement was widespread as attendees waited for the doors to open, and the festivities to begin. It was time for the Last Splash, back to school dance. Doors Opened, Tickets were sold, hands were stamped, and the warm summer night began. Students and teachers alike worked to make the night into that of good vibes and exciting atmosphere.

Jayci Coon, a senior leadership student who helped to set up the tropical decor, described the decor, "It included pineapples, leis, grass skirts, surfboards, crazy looking fish, and everything else under the sun!" She was excited to see what people thought and was looking forward to being part of the event. For many attendees, this was their first experience with a school dance. Daniel Chiles, a Junior, told me "I came to experience what a high school dance was like..." he personally didn’t like it but many others did.

Teachers helped with setup and logistics throughout. Teachers Hansen, Mattes, Smoljan, and Vaughan were important in running this event. Vaughan ran concessions mostly while the other teachers took shifts at the ticket counter.

Certain Partygoers took issue with some aspects of the dance, ranging from musical choices being bland to the strictly enforced dress code, including the banning of noodle straps or crop tops.

One of the many draws about the dance was the Italian Ice being sold outside at the lunch pavilion by Mustache Mikes Italian Ice. No matter what students thought about the dance itself, most would agree that the Italian Ice made any displeasure worth the trouble!
