Professional Dress Mondays!

Updated: Sep 27, 2020

by Joseph Langley

At Minarets, we pride ourselves as being young professionals, and we do our best to look the part! Professional dress Mondays give students a chance to show off their professionalism. Not only that, but they show parents, colleges, and anybody else looking at our school that we are prepared for the future. Dressing up doesn’t just make you look good. It also makes you more respected, more likely to be listened to, and gives you more control over your academic reputation.

That being said, it can also be quite a hassle to dress professionally. Most students at Minarets don’t dress up for these Mondays, and some have been vocally critical of the idea. Some don’t do it because they don’t like dressing up, and that’s totally understandable. It takes extra effort, it makes you stand out, and it doesn’t feel very important in the school setting.

Charlie Crose and Colby Jobinger in Professional Dress

In response to those concerns, junior Charlie Crose- a proud participant of professional dress Mondays- tells people to just have fun with it. “It’s very versatile, you can wear what would be professional given what job you’re going in to. You don’t need to go above and beyond, just have fun with it!” He, however, certainly went all out on the first Monday of the year, dressing in a full suit. He said this was to “Go big or go home”. In his view, this is an amazing opportunity because it teaches him how to be professional.

There have even been discussions of how to further incentivize dressing up like this, so that students can get more enjoyment out of participating. One suggestion would have a random teacher every Monday, or every few Mondays, give out a couple pro-points to all of the students in their class that dressed professionally. Another idea would incorporate professional dress Mondays into the new class points system, giving out individual points to people who participate. These points would lead to various rewards, such as free food from the snack bar, or discounts to dances.

The focus is on positive incentives. The idea is not to force anybody to dress professionally, or to make sure that everyone is dressed up every single Monday. The idea is to make sure the graduating students are ready to walk into their professional lives with confidence and skill.
