Pride Month Celebrations!

By Aidan Feskorn and Sofia Braz

As the school year is coming to an end, June is also fast approaching. However, besides summer vacation, another important occasion starts in June: LGBTQ+ Pride Month. LGBTQ+ Pride Month is celebrated throughout the month and is important to countless people, but what makes June the month of LGBTQ+ pride?

The month of June has always been vital to LGBTQ+ activism. On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall Uprising, a large riot against police officers harassing customers of a gay bar, occurred in New York. One year after, on June 28, 1970, the first pride parade was held, commemorating the events of the year prior. Since then, multiple pride parades and events have been held in June, and the month continues to be important to members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Pride Month is intended to not only be a celebration of gay rights in the United States, as declared by President Bill Clinton in 2000, but around the entire world as well. It acts as a celebration of LGBTQ+ people and their rights, and promotes inclusivity and friendship between members of the community and its allies. Pride Month is about celebrating what makes us different and promoting diversity worldwide and is an incredible celebration for anyone and everyone.
