With over twenty years of teaching experience under her belt, Mikendra McCoy has officially joined the Minarets Mustangs teaching crew! As the latest addition to the English Department McCoy will be teaching English classes for ninth, tenth, and twelfth graders. On top of these classes, McCoy also plans to start a debate team here at Minarets.

Prior to coming to Minarets, McCoy has been employed in a wide array of jobs, ranging from working in a lumber mill to working for the U.S. government. “I am a very hardworking person, and I do my best at anything I do,” said McCoy in an interview. McCoy explained that she chose to come to Minarets because she recently moved to Oakhurst and appreciated the proximity. She also commented that the culture of Minarets seemed to be very positive, and she wanted to be a part of it.

Now a few months into the school year, McCoy has taken a real liking to Minarets but not in ways she was expecting. She explained that the Minarets culture was truly unique and it was a bit of a culture shock. And dealing with the pandemic hasn’t made the transition any smoother. McCoy explained that starting the year as a new teacher with distance learning has been “interesting.” She said, “I don’t like it as much because I teach because of human focus, and it is hard not having humans actually in the classroom.”

Regardless, McCoy said that her goals for the year are “to try and make English interesting and break walls down” as well as “...let students have a voice and empower them to use that voice.”
