Like many other sports programs at Minarets, the boys' basketball team is training differently this year to accommodate conditions set by the pandemic. Even with new challenges arising, the team is still moving forward in preparation for another season.

When asked about how the pandemic has impacted coaching the team, head basketball coach Christopher Bedolla said, “Due to the restrictions on the number of people together at one time, we have primarily focused on virtual one on one sessions, group meetings, and video skill development. Not only has the pandemic affected Minarets basketball players but future basketball players that might play for Minarets.” Coach Bedolla also stated, “COVID has impacted our ability to dedicate time to our youth program and develop players in grades 3-8.”

Even with virtual setbacks, the basketball team has been developing well. Varsity basketball captain and senior Phoenix Bedolla said, “When my class first came in freshman year, we mostly had no experience and played just because we had nothing to do...throughout time though, every class that has come in after us is poised to win and do great things.”

Not only have there been changes in the mindset and skills of Minarets basketball players but changes in personal development as well. Coach Bedolla explained, “As far as development for varsity, this group of varsity players has become leaders through accountability, dedication, adversity, heartbreak, and their love to see each other succeed.”

Overall, the Minarets boys basketball program has grown remarkably over the last three years. Despite the lack of face-to-face involvement, the team is still continuing along its track of upward growth, and hopes are high for the nearing season.
