Minarets’ Automotive Maintenance Club S.L.E. The beginning of the Automotive Club, and the ideas behind it.

By Zoey Matheson

This school year, a new and unique SLE idea was introduced to our school board. The idea of an Automotive Maintenance Club was created by the seniors Sawyer Encinas and Aaron Barber. Their reasons for starting the club are simple: Sawyer and Aaron want to share their knowledge and many skills with our school while inspiring others to learn more about automotive maintenance.

Sawyer told us he was the one to first think of this unique idea. He took note that our school had no programs or elective classes regarding car maintenance, so why not start a club for their SLE?  Bringing this idea to Aaron, they both thought of creating something different for our school, to hopefully inspire the development of an Engines program in the future for Minarets High School.

To continue, Aaron told us, “The goal we have for our SLE is to educate and inspire the students of Minarets to pursue a career in automotive pathways, and/or how to overall repair their own vehicles when necessary or possible.” Sawyer added to the response saying, “We hope to inspire our school to adopt an engine program later on, as learning these kinds of skills can be very beneficial to those who might have vehicle issues in the near future.”

Their Club meetings have been taking place every Wednesday at the beginning of lunch, in room 502, the Welding classroom. The few meetings that have happened so far consisted of giving people the opportunities to help work on their cars, and teaching them simple maintenance, such as changing oil, is being taught to the people in this club. The further they go with this SLE, they hope to make tutorial videos working on different car problems that are fixable and share them online.

Overall they hope to have a large impact on the students of Minarets and hope to inspire many younger students to lean toward automotive pathways. As their SLE has just begun recently, we cannot wait to see what their SLE brings to Minarets. We wish them luck with their future plans and goals with this project.
