Greenhand Week is currently underway at Minarets High School. What is Greenhand week? Well, according to O’Neals-Minarets FFA Chapter President Reiley Stenberg, “Greenhand week is a week to give our new members a place…in the past members went to the Greenhand Leadership Conference (GLC) but we felt like we they weren't getting out of it what we wanted so we decided to put on our own GLC type week."

Freshman Delaney Castro proudly adds her green hand to the poster during the lunch time activity.

This week will be full of workshops and games for those freshman members of the FFA. The workshops will focus on teaching students what FFA is about: Career Development Events (CDEs) and Leadership Development events (LDEs), which include teams like Ag Issues, Cotton Judging, Forestry, and much more. This will really give new members a since of general knowledge of what they are getting into. Teacher Kenna Sandberg, an Agriculture Science and Mechanics Teacher at the school stated that “The goal is to get members knowledgeable about everything the FFA has to offer them and so the hope is that they learn about all the opportunities and get involved with the chapter.”

With the focus mainly being on Greenhand members this week, older members don’t want to feel left out. Reiley Stenberg, in response to this, revealed, “The monthly FFA meeting which will be followed by a trip to Rasin’ Hell Ranch, a haunted corn maze." This, and “The Penny Wars” are opportunities that older members will have a chance to participate in.

Freshmen Brandi Hale and Hailey Anderson show off their green hands.

The Penny Wars are a “war” between pro periods were a jar will be placed in pro period classrooms, and placing pennies in the jar will result in points. If you want to win, there is a secret way to sabotage other classrooms, using other coins. For example, this could be something like putting nickels in another classes jar will take away their points. At the end of the week the points will be totaled and the class with the most points will win a donut party.

The FFA has planned an action-packed week with many opportunities for learning and fun.
