From May 16th, to May 22, 2022 O’Neals-Minarets FFA took part in the Chowchilla, Madera County Fair. The chapter took animals such as sheep, cattle, swine, rabbits, and goats. As they headed to the fair, the preparation started the week before the start date. Prepping animals is no easy task as they were clipping, tattooing, or washing.
Joshua Wolford, a sophomore, showed a rabbit at this year's Chowchilla fair. Wolford had plenty to say about the event. He stated “It went pretty well, I was able to make $175 which is really good for a rabbit.” The sophomore went on to explain that it was his first year showing a rabbit, it was a great experience. He also elaborated on how he can’t wait for the next fair and suggests everyone who wants to join, to show an animal even if it's a small one for their first fair!
Tessa Camacho, a freshman involved in the swine aspect of fairs, explained how much fun she had throughout her livestock project. The freshman had a great showing experience, as both her shows went well. Camacho explained that she wished her pig would have picked his head up a little more during showmanship, but she did get 2nd place in her market class.
When asked about advice she’d give to future livestock exhibitors, she stated “ I would tell them that animals are an everyday thing. You have to walk, feed and brush them everyday in order to be successful. It is a lot of work, but in the end it all pays off because it is a lot of fun.”
