Acknowledging Acceptance

Throughout the years at Minarets, Gay-Straight Alliance Club (GSA) has been a constant beacon of support and acceptance for LGBTQ+ students. The club, in honor of its mission statement, has provided a safe space and a welcoming environment for all who choose to attend its meetings. Over the club’s lifespan, there have been many students involved; this year alone has seen an overwhelming influx of new members. With so many members, a multitude of diverse perspectives are brought to the table, and each member takes away something different from their experiences with the club.

Freshman Jae Jacobs has only been involved in GSA for a short time but already feels beloved by their club-mates. “Being accepted for who I am is something that makes me extremely happy, as it makes me feel like I’m a part of something for once,” Jacobs explained. They also added, “I feel like I have so many friends because of the community I’ve joined!”

Junior John-Paul Uribe explained how being accepted within a community of others is “euphoric.” They said that GSA is not just a club, but a family, and the support and acceptance provided is unexplainably wonderful. The GSA club is a living testament that when students are provided with resources that present support and acceptance, it leads to higher student morale, stronger ties, and an increased desire to come to school.
