I have been a student here at Minarets for about 2 months now and I can say that I have loved every second of it. Coming to a new school in the middle of the year can be super scary. If you don’t know anyone, then you’re scared of being seen sitting alone. If you do know someone, it can be very hard to find them. It’s a struggle that a lot of people will go through, whether you are an incoming freshman or a student that recently moved here. This is some advice that I can give:
Don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone. Join a club or team! You get to know people who have similar interests, while getting involved with the school. Within the three days that I started here, I was on the Floral Team, showing a sheep at the fair, and signed up to attend State Leadership Conference for FFA. I’m so happy that I put myself out there because it led to me meeting so many great people!
Find some friends in your classes and simply ask if you can sit with them at lunch. This way you get to meet their friends and see if they are people who you would enjoy being around. It's so important to have a good group of friends who you can relate to. School was much more enjoyable once I had found an amazing group of people to sit with at lunch and in my classes.
Connect with your classmates outside of school. Ask for their numbers or follow them on social media. Make plans with them on the weekends. Those extra steps will create a deeper connection.
Make sure to not fall behind in your classes. Maintain a good relationship with all of your teachers, which will make catching up on work easier. Even though it’s easy to slack off on your work, you’ll be proud of yourself at the end of the day when it’s all completed. Always remember that you are here to learn, succeed in your classes, and ultimately attend college or wherever life takes you.
