Keep It Native Day (KIND): FAQ

Updated: May 24, 2020

Keep It Native Day (KIND) is coming up quickly in a few months and students are already getting prepared for it. While the event is put on as an SLE, it involves all Native American Club members and Native American students on campus.

What is Keep It Native Day? KIND is an event that is ran by Native American students to show their culture to the schools in Chawanakee Unified School District and also other schools as well.

Why is KIND important? It is very important because it is a way to show off the culture of Native Americans. The event is to have people experience what Native Americans experience, to show how they get prepared for their ceremonies by dancing. KIND is a way for the school to help other students understand the traditions. Who created KIND? Brandon Lourence, he started this 6 years ago at Minarets High School.

Indian Tacos are also sold every year at the event. What is an Indian Taco? Indian Tacos are food that the Native American Club make to sell, which is a Fry Bread that comes with beans, meat, lettuce, cheese, and onions as add ons. They sell Indian Tacos every year and drinks as well.

Who is invited? Minarets has invited North Fork Elementary, Spring Valley Elementary and last year was the first year we invited another district to this event, which was Sierra High School. Of course, the students of Minarets are also invited to attend and are given an extended lunch for the day. North Fork Rancheria, Fresno State, FAIHP, and a few others as well are also involved in the event. They provide activities for the younger students in Elementary school to enjoy while the event goes on.
