What’s Happening in the Snack Shack?

Updated: May 24, 2020

Starting out a day of hard work being hungry is something nobody wants to do. That’s why the fantastic lunch ladies provide food for the students of Minarets everyday before school and during lunch. Every morning, students come and stop for a quick bite at the Snack Shack.

Food is always offered for breakfast and lunch, but who is making the food? Mrs. Kristen starts her day by getting to school at 7:15 a.m. to prepare food for the students. At 7:45 am, our wonderful Shack Shack ladies open up for business. Making something both tasty and healthy is extremely challenging: did you know, according to Kristen Hillerman, “All ingredients are checked before we can use them, the state mandates what we serve to the students. A school meal contains five components, and we make sure that every student takes at least three of the five components. This helps us make sure that the kids are eating healthy."

Not only do the lunch ladies work to feed us but they also help ensure that the students that eat here stay healthy. Like most jobs, there is the work, but also the personal bonds that are created, “Getting to know our student helpers, and helping kids come out of their shell. They all have a special place in our hearts, and we couldn't do it without all the student helpers." From checking ingredients to making parfaits, there's a lot of dedication put in by staff and students.

Mrs. Hillerman gave us insight to some fun and goofy times in the snack shack saying, “There was a year that the lunch ladies and I all dressed up as the rock band Kiss on Halloween, full make-up and everything!”

Not all the time do we give appreciation to the staff that works hard everyday for the students. Next time you stop for breakfast or lunch give thanks to the hard workers that make it possible!
