Minarets Lip Dub FAQ

As the annual Minarets Lip Dub approaches, many new freshmen and new students are still unaware of what the Lip Dub is and what it contains. Minarets Press had the opportunity of interviewing our media teacher, Mr. Juan Ortiz, in order to have him answer some questions about the Minarets Lip Dub for students and parents who want to be in the know.

What is a Lip Dub?

J: The lip dub is basically a single shot (no breaks in the recording) music video.

What does Minarets do in preparation for this event?

J: To prepare for the event I start by teaching my media classes the basics of running a lip dub and have them create their own class lip dub. This helps me do the all school lip dub because these media students can now explain things to people when I’m not around to do so myself.

What has been your favorite Lip Dub thus far?

J: This is a really hard question to answer, but if I had to choose one I would say that last year (2018) was my favorite. The way we organized it and were able to make it more engaging for a greater percentage of our students.

What motivates you to take on this event?

J: I have always been a person who believes and tries to boost school spirit and I feel this event can do just that.

What roles are assigned for students who want to be more involved (not in the crowd)?

J: Students who do not want to be an extra in the lip dub can participate in a number of ways. The primary roles on the crew are camera operator, director, and our around person. We also utilize photographers and support staff to do things like direct crowds and make sure extras are in the correct place at the correct time.

Will the Lip Dub be set up like years past?

J: Last year we went to a more condensed area to highlight whole classes and give more students camera time. I think that format really worked well and we will be probably do something similar this year.

How will songs be chosen for this years Lip Dub?

J: Generally the crew proposes a number of songs that is narrowed to a shorter list of 3-4. I like to send out a form and let the student body vote to give them a say in the song we use.

How do teachers plan their classroom for the Lip Dub?

J: After song and path is set we will contact teachers to see who would like to be involved. Once they are set we will ask them to come up with some kind of skit or scene that matches the theme.

Do you sign up for a class you would like to be in, or are you assigned a room?

J: More than likely we will follow the format from last year, so you will be assigned to a teacher.
