Step Up and Keep the Campus Beautiful!

Updated: May 21, 2020

Waste is, sadly, a product of accomplishment. Isaac Newton once said, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Now, clearly Newton was not talking about the manifestation of waste, or trash. The quote mainly a physical one. One of forces; when one force pushes there is another pulling with an equal strength. Despite its intent, however, this quote can apply to many things. When somebody eats food wrapped in plastic; the plastic is left behind. When somebody finally hits a home run after years of practice and effort; the ball is sometimes lost into the fields, left to decay. This joyous event creates waste, no matter the amazing experience tied to it.

There is a significant problem with this comparison, however. Newton stated that the reaction was both opposite and equal- a statement that is true when it comes to the physicality of the universe. With the topic in question, however, the reaction is not equal. Memories and accomplishment last forever; while the possible counterpart of waste can be cleaned up. This dutiful application of community spirit is exactly what teacher David Elm and coach Jesse Darrah did with a group of Minarets students this Community Day. This group consisted of sophomores Ezekiel Chacon, Gabriel Hawley, Mercedes Leyman, Ethan Mikesell, juniors Joseph Langley, Michael Nott, Ledger Quiram, Colton Ralph, and freshmen Danny Saenz, Isaac Salgado, Miguel Sanchez, and Sebastian Vellandi.

After splitting into two groups, we made a full sweep of the campus and the area out by the football field; working hard to clear the campus of waste and trash. Though it may not be the most pleasant of ideas; the experience is both satisfying and necessary; and as the process commences, the campus evolves from one of not only cultural beauty, but physical beauty as well. It is here, however, that we must maintain that beauty. This particular solicitude is not uncommon; and is echoed by hundreds of people around campus. Some of the students here have stepped up to reset the issue; but we can do no more than that. It is you; the student body, who must maintain this beauty. Do not disappoint the world around you. Pick up trash you see. Throw your own trash into the trash. These are the simple acts that will make the campus beautiful.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Properly dispose of your trash, and you may very well find that the reaction is one of recognition and beauty.
