¿Qué es Día de Muertos?

Updated: May 21, 2020

¡Fantastico! The Minarets Club de Español’s Día de Muertos celebration was a success! Lots of students from across campus joined the club for cookie decorating, horchata, and the movie Coco. Día de Muertos is a very significant celebration all across the world. Minarets’ Club de Español recognizes Día de Muertos due to its special significance in México and in Central America. Día de Muertos is celebrated based on the Aztec culture in Mexico, and is celebrated from October 31st to November 2nd every year.

In Mexico, families will create altars, or ofrendas, to remember those in their family who have passed away. Ofrendas contain many colorful flowers, calaveras de azúcar (sugar skulls), and framed photos of late loved ones. The colorfulness of Día de Muertos is due to the happy nature of the holiday; Día de Muertos is about celebrating the dead, not mourning them.

Parades are also very common during the days of celebration. They are a way of creating an even more happy tone of the holiday. Lots of people like to paint their faces like calaveras de azúcar and wear very colorful clothing to the parades. Día de Muertos is a very notable holiday especially in México.

The Club de Español here at Minarets celebrates Día de Muertos every year. To all Mustangs, come join us next year for lots of food, fun, and cultural celebration!
