Elizabeth Whitcomb is here to follow students from their youth until they graduate and she’s very happy to be here at Minarets! Having taught at North Fork Elementary for five years, she joked about following students into high school but it came true when a position at Minarets opened and she took the job. Whitcomb said “I was joking with the kids when I said I was going to follow you into high school. It was just one way to keep growing in the district and then also getting to support a lot of kids.” Currently, she teaches study skill classes, math and supports students that need additional help in classrooms.
Whitcomb says she absolutely loves teaching, especially when students discover their “aha” moment, or when they understand. As a special education teacher, this will be her sixth year teaching and eighth in the district as a classified paraprofessional. She currently shares a room with veteran teacher Therese Righter, who Whitcomb described as supportive and helpful in helping her adjust to Minarets.
Minarets is known for its technology usage and Elizabeth Whitcomb commented that “I do like the way that the technology is being used in the classroom. I'm seeing the products from all the students and they're impressive— I feel like you guys [the students] are very impressive, very ahead, you guys are going to come out very ahead of many some of your peers because you're learning how to do professional things that are real job skills that you can take into employment.”
Yet, a challenge for her has been learning all the different sites and programs used on the school laptops. There’s a lot that she doesn’t know so she’s growing along with students; She says her goal is to make sure she understands everything her students know. Elizabeth Whitcomb is very excited to be here with Minarets High School students and can’t wait to see what the students create
