Updated: Sep 27, 2020

The 2018/2019 school year was an exceptional time for Minarets Key Club.

  • All members of the club have accumulated a total of 1001.75 service hours, blowing the 2017-2018 school year with 648.5 hours out of the water.

  • In total the club has donated over $2,000 to organizations such as Unicef, Cal Fire Foundation, and American Cancer Society.

  • Active Senior members this year consisted of three individuals: Aaron Hall, Casper Nelson, and Novena Valentine.

  • Key Club grew by 24 new members this past year who were all recognized with a certificate, booklet, membership card and pin at Instillation night. This event took place on May 14, 2019.

All previous and current board members were asked four questions to highlight which included:

How long have you been in Key Club?

What has been your favorite community service related event this year?

What have you learned from your experience?

What would you like to tell anyone interested in pursuing Key Club?

You can find their responses and get to know these outstanding students below.

I have been in Key Club since my sophomore year.

I would have to say that my favorite event would be the Rose Parade decorating in Pasadena. I have learned that communication to each other and body language plays one of the biggest roles regardless of what you're doing.

I have also learned that there are many opportunities to talk to someone or just give them a smile and it could make their day whether you know it or not.

I would like for anyone interested in Key Club to know that it can open up new doors from meeting new people to developing new skills, and finding that new thing that you never thought you would be interested in. It's a fun way to get in service hours. I can promise that you will not regret joining the club.

Secretary: Casper Nelson

(Current Senior)

I have been a part of Key Club since the second quarter of my junior year, making that year 2017. During my junior year, I was just a normal Key Club member, but for my senior year, I've acted as the club's Secretary. It has been a grand experience and I'm grateful for every minute put into the club.

This year in specific it has to be when we had the privilege of putting on 'Relay For Life', but there are many different Key Club community service events I've been a part of and with all I haven't had any negative experiences.

I have learned the rewarding feeling of putting forth your efforts towards a greater good. Whether your community is local or worldwide, to help others is the prize that I feel volunteer work has provided for myself.

Please pursue it. You don't know what you like unless you explore it for yourself. There is more than one way to give back to people and to help out others. People like to highlight how good it looks on applications for jobs, colleges, etc., however, to me it isn't just a title to put on paper but an experience to hold dear to oneself. It's one way to do your part in fueling positivity into the world with lending a helpful hand from time to time.

I, Payton Poore have been a part of key club for one year.

My favorite service event was either when we helped decorate the Kiwanis float at the Rose Bowl Parade or helping during Relay for Life.

I have learned a lot from being a part of this club like leadership, organization and public speaking skills.

For those interested in Key Club I highly recommend it! You are able to help out the community while having fun and you get to meet new people.

Vice President: Ryan Hough

(Current Sophomore)

I've been in Key Club for one year.

My favorite event was the Relay for Life, I learned that through tough times there are others experiencing similar things and they can help.

I would tell anyone interested in key club to join as soon as possible because its a group that is happy to help anyone in need and there should be no reason to not join. Not only does Key Club benefit others it also benefits you.

Secretary: Rebecca Townsend

(Current Junior)

I’ve had the pleasure of being in Key Club since my Freshman year at Minarets.

Currently, my favorite service opportunity that has presented itself in front of me has been Relay for Life. There have been many other outstanding community outreach events I have been a part of, but this one by far takes the cake. I enjoyed Relay the most because of how large the event was and how many people from the community were involved in some way.

I have learned so many things through my experience with being involved in Key Club. The club has taught me the feeling of family within the community. It has improved my social skills, has provided me with important and useful connections for my future, and improved my amount of friends.

Anyone who may be interested in Key Club should check us out. Stop by our weekly meetings on Wednesday’s during lunch. Being involved within your community with other students can strengthen bonds between like-minded people, can look fantastic when applying for colleges, and personally, made me a happier person. This club can change your future, stop by, we welcome everyone!

Treasurer: Maegan Redman

(Current Junior)

I have been in Key Club for one full club year.

My favorite community service event was volunteering at the Evangle home where I got to make cookies and crafts with the homeless women and children

From my experiences in Key Club, I have learned that community service is a very rewarding activity and being able to provide for other people is one of my passions

If you are interested in pursuing Key Club, I would definitely recommend you come out to one of our meetings. We are excited about helping our community and people less fortunate, and give memories that last a lifetime.

Editor: Cheyenne Upton

(Current Junior)

I have been in Key Club for two years.

My favorite community service related event this year would have to be the Rose Bowl Parade. What I have learned from my experience with the Key Club is how to cooperate well with others.

For anyone that is interested in pursuing Key Club all I can say is that it is wonderful amount of time and you get to meet people that are very amazing. You will have a fun time! You should do it!
